Electricity in Ladakh is genuinely unreliable — not in a dramatic, total-blackout way, but in the daily way that means you cannot count on a socket being live when you need it. Leh has power cuts that can last several hours, timed variously and without consistent pattern. Guesthouses often supplement grid power with solar panels and inverter batteries, which smooth out shorter interruptions. But for high-demand charging — a mirrorless camera, a laptop, two phones — even a well-equipped guesthouse may only reliably charge one device at a time, overnight.

Outside Leh, the situation varies sharply. Some areas have reasonably consistent grid or solar power. Remote areas — Hanle, the deeper Changthang plateau, some sections of the Nubra Valley away from Diskit, the road to Tso Moriri — have electricity that ranges from intermittent to absent. If your itinerary takes you away from Leh for multiple days, assume that charging during those days will be uncertain or impossible.

The practical implication: you need to manage your power before you leave Leh, not rely on replenishing it on the road.

Cold Weather and Battery Drain

The second variable — less obvious and more significant than people expect — is cold. Lithium-ion batteries, which power almost all modern electronics, discharge faster in the cold and recharge less efficiently. This affects cameras most acutely: a battery that shows 80% at room temperature can read 30% after an hour of use in sub-zero overnight conditions at Pangong. Smartphones experience the same phenomenon but are usually kept closer to body temperature in pockets.

The standard management approach at altitude and in cold conditions:

  • Sleep with batteries in your sleeping bag or inner jacket pocket on cold nights.
  • Carry at least two spare batteries for cameras; single-battery operation in these conditions is a liability.
  • Keep your phone in an inner pocket rather than an outer jacket pocket when temperatures drop.
  • Power banks stored in cold overnight temperatures will have reduced capacity the next morning — bring them inside or into the sleeping bag too.

For multi-day treks or extended time in Changthang or Nubra without grid access, portable solar panels are an option. A 25–40W folding panel can meaningfully charge a phone and power bank during a sunny Ladakh day — and Ladakh, as a high-altitude desert rain shadow, gets substantial solar radiation even when it is cold.

Caveats: solar charging is slower than mains charging; in cloudy conditions or at very high altitude, the panel needs direct, unobstructed sun to work effectively; and wind at altitude can be an issue with lightweight panels (secure them against your pack rather than leaving them free-hanging). Charge your power bank from the solar panel during the day, then charge your devices from the power bank — this is more reliable than device-to-panel direct charging.

Charging Strategy by Area

Leh town

Charge everything fully overnight before any departure. Use the guesthouse's largest-capacity socket (typically the kitchen or common area). Most good guesthouses have inverter/solar backup, so overnight charging is usually reliable. If you are spending multiple days in Leh, this is the replenishment window before the road.

Nubra Valley (Diskit, Hunder)

Electricity availability has improved in recent years in the Diskit area. Smaller guesthouses and campsites further from Diskit may have limited solar power that cannot charge multiple high-drain devices simultaneously.

Pangong Tso lakeshore (Spangmik, Man, Merak)

Tented camps at Pangong operate on solar power. Charging is generally possible but slow. Expect to charge overnight and not rely on full charges by morning. Prioritise what matters most: camera batteries over everything else if photography is your priority; a phone for emergencies over everything else if safety is the priority.

Changthang / Hanle

The remotest area in mainstream Ladakh itineraries. Hanle village has solar power, but the Hanle Observatory area and surrounding plateau have minimal infrastructure. This is power-bank country. Carry what you need to last the trip segment and plan to replenish only when you return to Leh.
