What Altitude Does to Your Body at Dawn
Overnight at altitude, several things happen simultaneously. Oxygen saturation drops slightly during sleep — most people experience some degree of periodic breathing in the first few nights, where the breathing rhythm disrupts rather than settling into the smooth cycles of low-altitude sleep. By morning, you are waking from a sleep that has been slightly less restorative than usual, in an environment where the air contains roughly thirty per cent less available oxygen than you are used to.
Cortisol follows its natural diurnal curve — rising in the two hours before waking to prepare the body for the day. At altitude, this cortisol rise is somewhat amplified by the low-grade physiological demand that altitude places on the body. You may feel alert but also slightly headachy, with a mild heaviness in the limbs. This is normal for the first two or three days.
The hypoxic ventilatory response — the body's reflex to breathe faster in reduced oxygen — is already active. The breathing rate at rest is marginally elevated. This is a feature, not a problem: the body is already working on the breath before you consciously attend to it. The morning practice, approached correctly, compounds and guides what is already happening.
Breathwork: What Works and What to Avoid
Pranayama at altitude is not the same as pranayama at sea level. Some practices support acclimatisation; others place additional stress on a system that is already working hard. The distinction matters.
Practices that work well at altitude:
- Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing): Calming, bilateral, equalising. Supports the parasympathetic system without hyperventilating. One of the best morning practices at altitude — it helps regulate the slightly elevated breathing rhythm without forcing it.
- Diaphragmatic breathing: Slow, deep, belly-led breathing. Helps counter the shallow thoracic breathing that altitude sometimes produces. The emphasis is on full exhalation, which activates the parasympathetic system and prepares the diaphragm for a full subsequent inhale.
- Extended exhalation: Any breathing pattern where the exhale is longer than the inhale. Four counts in, six counts out. This ratio directly activates parasympathetic dominance and reduces the cortisol amplitude of the morning rise.
Practices to defer until you are acclimatised:
- Kapalabhati and Bhastrika: Rapid, forceful breathing practices that increase oxygen demand and can trigger hyperventilation symptoms at altitude — dizziness, tingling, nausea. They are not dangerous in healthy people at altitude, but they are not comfortable, and they are counterproductive when the goal is calming the morning nervous system.
- Breath retention (Kumbhaka): Holding the breath after inhalation at altitude amplifies hypoxic stress in a context where it is already elevated. Save breath retention for sea level, or for after acclimatisation is complete — which takes at least three to five days at Leh.

Yoga at Altitude: Lower Intensity, Greater Effect
The instinct, for experienced practitioners, is to maintain the same intensity of practice they have at home. This is the instinct to resist. At altitude, your body is already working harder than usual — just existing at 3,500 metres requires measurably more cardiac and respiratory effort than existing at sea level. Adding the demand of a vigorous vinyasa practice on top of that, especially in the first few days, tends to produce fatigue that takes the rest of the day to recover from.
What works instead: yin yoga, slow hatha, mobility work, and restorative positions. Poses that open the chest and ribcage — supta baddha konasana, sphinx, supported fish — aid the breathing mechanics that altitude requires. Extended time in each position allows the nervous system to settle rather than chase transitions. Savasana at altitude, with the heart rate already gently elevated, produces a rest quality that flat-land practice rarely matches.
By days three and four, as acclimatisation progresses — oxygen saturation stabilises, breathing regularises, sleep improves — there is room to add movement. The cardiovascular work of climbing is appropriate; the movement is rhythmic and unscored; the destination is an encounter with scale and silence that does something to the attention that a studio cannot.
Sunrise as Practice
There is a particular quality to morning light in Leh — the high altitude strips out much of the atmosphere that softens and diffuses light at lower elevations.
