The first clear night in Ladakh is a recalibration. Most people who have spent their adult lives in or near cities have never seen the Milky Way — not as a smear of light that might be cloud, but as a dense, detailed band of stars spanning the entire sky with the structure of a galaxy visible in it. Ladakh is one of the places where that still exists.
The reasons are specific and worth understanding: they tell you where to go, when to go, and what to expect. The quality of Ladakh's night sky is not accidental or simply about being remote. It's the product of three physical conditions that happen to coincide here — altitude, atmospheric dryness, and genuine absence of urban light pollution. Each one matters independently. Together they produce skies that rank among the best in Asia for astronomical observation.
Why Ladakh's skies are what they are
Altitude. Most of Ladakh sits above 3,500 metres above sea level. The Changthang plateau — where the best skies are concentrated — is higher, much of it above 4,000m. At altitude, you're above a significant fraction of the atmosphere's total mass. Less atmosphere means less light scattering, less water vapour, and less of the refractive distortion that blurs stars at lower elevations. The stars don't twinkle as much at altitude. They appear more like fixed points of light than the flickering sources familiar from low-elevation viewing.
Atmospheric dryness. Ladakh is in the rain shadow of the Himalayas. The monsoon that saturates most of India between June and September deposits almost nothing in Ladakh — the mountains block it. The result is one of the driest inhabited regions in India, with annual rainfall in Leh measured in centimetres rather than metres. Low humidity means minimal water vapour in the air above. Water vapour is one of the primary sources of atmospheric scattering that reduces sky quality; its absence makes a measurable difference to what you can see.
Light pollution. Leh town has enough lighting to affect the sky immediately above it — the horizon glow from the settlement is visible from nearby hills. But drive thirty minutes out of town, toward Changthang or up toward any of the high passes, and you're beyond the effective radius of artificial light. The Changthang plateau, where villages are small and widely spaced, has some of the lowest light pollution density of any inhabited region in South Asia. At Hanle, 260 kilometres from Leh, the sky quality is among the best anywhere on the subcontinent.
Hanle: India's dark sky reserve
Hanle in the Changthang plateau hosts the Indian Astronomical Observatory (IAO) — one of the highest optical and infrared observatories in the world, operated by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. The IAO was established specifically because of Hanle's exceptional sky quality: clear nights through most of the year, altitude above 4,500 metres, minimal humidity, and a location remote enough from urban light to give professional astronomical measurements.
The Hanle area was subsequently declared India's first Dark Sky Reserve — a formal designation that seeks to protect the region's sky quality by regulating outdoor lighting in and around the affected area. The reserve covers a significant zone of the Changthang plateau; the local Changpa nomadic community and village settlements are participants in the effort to minimise light at night.
For astrophotography visitors, Hanle represents the best available sky quality within reach by road from Leh. The drive is long — roughly five to six hours each way — and the altitude at Hanle is high enough to require proper acclimatisation before staying overnight. The Inner Line Permit that covers the Changthang area is required. But the sky at Hanle on a clear, moonless night is a different category of experience from what's available closer to Leh. Other locations for night sky observation
You don't need to reach Hanle to see exceptional stars in Ladakh. Several locations offer very good sky quality with less logistical complexity:
Changthang plateau beyond Leh — The road toward Pangong Tso and the areas east of Leh, away from the town's light influence, begin to show excellent sky quality from relatively modest distances. Overnight camps at Pangong are particularly effective — the lake's reflective surface adds to the visual impact, and the altitude (Pangong at roughly 4,350m) means less atmosphere above you than at Leh.
Nubra Valley — The valley north of Khardung La, particularly the areas around Hunder and the sand dunes, offers dark skies with a foreground landscape that photographs well at night. The sand dunes and the occasional Bactrian camel silhouette against the stars make for images that are harder to achieve at purely geological locations.
High mountain passes — Khardung La, Wari La, and the passes toward Hanle offer brief but extraordinary sky access during overnight or early-morning crossings. The altitude at most of these passes exceeds 5,000 metres; the sky quality is exceptional but the cold and altitude make extended photography challenging without adequate preparation.
When to go: the best seasons for astrophotography
The Milky Way's galactic core is visible in the night sky from roughly April through September, with the peak visibility window — when the core is highest in the sky and most prominent — falling between June and August. For most visitors to Ladakh, this coincides naturally with the main tourist season when roads are open and the region is accessible.
Moon phase matters as much as location. A full moon washes out fainter stars and makes Milky Way photography significantly harder. New moon periods — the four to five days around each new moon — give the darkest skies. Planning around the lunar calendar improves results substantially; basic astronomy apps show the moon phase calendar months in advance.
July and August are peak months for both accessibility and Milky Way visibility. The skies are reliably clear after the afternoon thunderstorms that occasionally develop over the mountains (though Ladakh's rain shadow means most of these pass without significant rainfall in Leh). September maintains good sky quality with somewhat longer nights and the beginning of cooler temperatures that can affect battery life and cold-finger camera operation.
Camera settings for astrophotography at altitude
The fundamentals of astrophotography don't change at altitude, but the conditions — cold air, dry atmosphere, potential altitude fatigue — affect how you work. The settings below are starting points for wide-field Milky Way photography with a mirrorless or DSLR camera and a wide-angle lens:

- 3200 – 6400
- Shutter speed
- 15 – 25 seconds
- Focus
- Manual, on a bright star
The 500 rule gives a rough upper limit for shutter speed before stars trail visibly: divide 500 by your focal length (in full-frame equivalent terms) to get the maximum shutter speed in seconds. A 24mm lens on a full-frame camera gives roughly 20 seconds before trailing becomes visible. Cropped sensors require an additional adjustment for their crop factor.
At altitude, battery performance drops — cold air reduces battery capacity significantly. Carry spare batteries kept warm in an inside pocket. Condensation is less of an issue in Ladakh's dry air than at lower elevations, but temperature drops quickly after sunset; keep lenses warm during setup and allow time for the camera to equilibrate before shooting if you've moved from a warm vehicle to cold air.
Practical note: The darkness that makes for excellent astrophotography also means no ambient light for navigation or camera operation. A red-light headlamp preserves your night vision while allowing you to work. Stay warm — temperatures at Changthang and high-altitude locations drop well below zero even in July. What stargazing is like without a camera
The astrophotography angle dominates online coverage of Ladakh's night sky. But naked-eye stargazing in the Changthang is its own experience — one that doesn't require any equipment beyond warm clothing and the willingness to lie on your back.
The Milky Way at a dark site like Hanle or the Changthang plateau is not the faint smear familiar from light-polluted areas. It's a structure — a band with visible internal variation, brighter and denser in the direction of the galactic centre, with dark lanes and nebulae visible within it. The Andromeda galaxy is visible without optical aid as a faint oval patch. Satellites cross regularly; meteor showers (the Perseids peak in mid-August) produce multiple visible meteors per hour from a dark site.
People who have spent their careers under office lighting and city skies often describe the experience of a genuine dark sky as unexpectedly affecting — not in a manufactured way, but in the simple sense of having a scale reference that most urban life does not provide. The sky at Hanle or on the Changthang plateau on a clear moonless night is not a novelty. It's a reminder.

Frequently asked questions
Can you see the Milky Way from Leh itself?
Partially — from the outskirts of Leh or the hills above the town, away from the direct light of the bazaar and guesthouses. Leh is not as light-polluted as Indian cities, and on dark nights the Milky Way is visible, particularly toward the south and southeast. But for the full experience — the dense galactic core clearly visible, the full brightness and structure of the band — you need to be away from Leh's glow, which means driving 30–60 minutes or more toward the Changthang. Staying overnight at Pangong Tso or at a camp in the Changthang gives the best accessible dark-sky experience without travelling as far as Hanle.
Is a permit needed to visit Hanle for stargazing?
Yes. Hanle is in the Changthang area of eastern Ladakh, which requires an Inner Line Permit covering the restricted zone. The permit is obtained in Leh before departure. Foreign nationals and Indian nationals both require the permit for the Hanle area. Some parts of the Changthang have additional restricted zones; check current requirements with the permit office or a local travel agent, as the boundaries and requirements can change. What camera equipment is best for Ladakh astrophotography?
A mirrorless or DSLR camera with manual control over aperture, shutter speed, and ISO — combined with a wide-angle prime lens of f/2.8 or faster — gives good results. Full-frame sensors have advantages in low-light noise performance, but modern crop-sensor cameras produce excellent astrophotography results. A sturdy tripod is essential; wind at altitude can affect stability even with apparently solid setups. Remote shutter release (wired or wireless) avoids camera shake from pressing the shutter button. An intervalometer for time-lapses is worth carrying if that's an interest. Bring more batteries than you think you need.
When is the best month for astrophotography in Ladakh?
July through September, combining the accessibility of open roads (Manali–Leh highway, Changthang routes) with the galactic core visibility that peaks in summer. July and August give the best Milky Way position and reliable clear skies after the occasional afternoon weather. September offers longer nights and fewer people. Plan around new moon periods within these months for the darkest skies. The winter months (December–March) offer extremely dark skies and very low humidity, but most roads are closed, accommodation is limited, and temperatures at the Changthang make outdoor photography physically demanding.
Are drone restrictions a concern for night photography?
Drones in Ladakh are regulated — permission is required for drone flights, and significant areas near military installations and the Line of Actual Control are restricted regardless of permit. For ground-based astrophotography (camera on a tripod), there are no specific restrictions beyond the usual permit requirements for the areas you're visiting. Do not fly drones in restricted zones; the Changthang and Hanle areas are close to sensitive border regions.
A clear night at altitude in Ladakh — the Milky Way fully visible, the silence complete, the temperature sharp enough to keep you awake — is one of those experiences that arrives without announcement and stays with you for longer than the photograph.
